11 Great Tips If Your Dog Is Afraid Of Thunderstorms!

So the topic here is thunderstorms, loud noises, fireworks and other things that can distress a dog. When you think about dogs think about the fact that their hearing is different than ours. Noise phobia, particularly from thunderstorms and fireworks, is extremely common in dogs. Trembling, pacing, salivating, hiding, and even destructive behavior are all too familiar for some pet parents during the fireworks and storm season. Why are they getting distressed?

Let’s think about for a second. What happens when you have a thunderstorm coming? I noticed that the birds tend to die down they’re their noises and the squirrels and the rabbits go and hide. You don’t hear anything. They’re all kind of going to a safe spot to get away from the weather. Now a dog does the same thing. They just want to go to a “den” or “cave” or small spot where they can feel safe and protected. But they also want to have a little bit of a view out to see as well to make sure that they’re safe.

So our question today what to do if your dog or puppy is very afraid of thunderstorms? If your dog is panting or starts to develop a look like it’s a little bit uncomfortable when a thunderstorm approaches then that’s where these tips will help. You need to put these tips to work right away because if you wait too long the anxiety is going to build up. There’s not going to be as much of an effect if you wait.

Click HERE For a FREE Training Course

Now puppies are a little bit easier because you can do exposure therapy while training them. What you do if you have a puppy is, during your training sessions with them, play an audio track of a thunderstorm during the sessions. Then gradually you can build up the volume and they’re going to get used to the sound. Now with the positive reinforcement they’re getting, like treats, as they are learning and playing they will be more relaxed. Also you are there so it’s comfortable for them and eventually they are just going to get use to the sound and they will see it as a positive thing.

Grown dogs are a little bit different. To a dog thunderstorms are going be similar to fireworks and other loud noises.

So what can you do to help?

First, a couple of things we don’t want to do. These are things that might be instinctual for us.

1.) We might want to call the dog and hold it and make it feel better. What we want to do ultimately is help it feel better of course. But what that’s going to do is actually validate the dog’s fear and can cause more anxiety.

2.) The other thing that we don’t want to do is to transfer any anxiety that we may have onto the dog. So we want to maintain calmness ourselves and just be aware of how you’re feeling. Dogs are very intuitive and they definitely pick up on your energy.

3.) Monitor weather broadcasts and websites during the storm season to make sure that you know what’s coming. Also know when fireworks will be scheduled in your area.

4.) If possible, stay at home with your pet so you can supervise them.

5.)Ensure all their microchip details are up to date too, just in case they manage to escape.

6.) Your pet may have a particular area that they choose to go to where they feel safe. If not, choose a quiet part of the house where you can close the blinds or curtains, and where your pet can’t injure themselves.

7.) Similar to swaddling a baby in a blanket, the Thundershirt (Click HERE) and anxiety wraps work by applying gentle pressure to the sides of the torso, helping to reduce stress and fear. These are safe, and very easy to use.

8.) Did you know, that after giving birth, female dogs release a pheromone from their mammary glands to help calm her puppies? Clever, huh? Lucky for us, there’s a synthetic version of this pheromone that can be used for a variety of anxiety conditions in dogs. Adaptil (Click HERE) is safe, odorless to humans, and it comes in a spray (Click HERE), diffuser, or Collar (Click HERE). You can use these in that safe haven we were talking about earlier.

9.) Ever made a chamomile tea for yourself to help unwind after a stressful day? Natural Animal Solutions Calm (Click HERE) contains chamomile, among other beneficial ingredients, in an easy-to-administer liquid.

10.) Another daily supplement that you can try is Complete Calm Chews (Click HERE), which contain tryptophan, a precursor to serotonin, which contributes to a sense of well being in dogs.

11.) Finally, have a chat to your vet about behavior modification techniques that you can try. These might involve relaxation training, the use of a thunder CD for Desensitization, as well as Counter-Conditioning, which trains your dog to associate a scary sound with something positive like treats or playtime. Your vet can also discuss medication with you, if appropriate.

All in all, it’s important to never punish your pet if they display fearful behavior, as this will ultimately only exacerbate the problem.

What you need:

Parchment Paper

Rolling Pin

2 Cups of 100% Organic Whole Wheat Flower

2 – 4 Ounce Jars of Baby Food

Cookie Cutter

Bowl

1 Cup Measuring Cup

Let’s get started on these dog treats. Pour two cups of 100% Organic Whole Wheat Flower into a bowl. Next add the 2 jars of baby food. I use the green beans or the carrots but you can use whatever ones you want. Make sure that what you use is safe for the dog. You want to do your research before you choose a certain baby food. Because you don’t know what is safe for them or not. I do know these ones, the carrots and the green beans, are good for dogs.

Mix It Up

Now you stir your mixture to get a good consistency. Knead it almost like you’re making dough for sugar cookies. That’s the consistency you’re trying to get so you can roll it out, knead it and roll it out. You can use your hands or a spatula to get it ready to take it out of the bowl.

Create Your Treats

Next just kind of squeeze it and work it into a little ball. Now take some flour and put it on the counter top or table just so it doesn’t stick when you cut them out. So now take little pieces off of the ball and use the rolling pin to flatten them. Then just use a cookie cutter to cut out your treats. I like a small size because they’re perfect dog treat size. You can use any kind of cookie cutter that you want for your treats and do anything pretty much. So whatever your heart desires.

Time To Bake

Now put them all on a cookie sheet here lined with the parchment paper. Put them in the oven on 350 degrees for 20 minutes. Be sure to keep an eye on them so you can make sure that they don’t burn. Sometimes I don’t even go up to the 20 minutes. I’ll have about a minute left and they are done. It really depends on their size and how your oven cooks. So just keep an eye on them.

Cool and Serve

Once they are all done you will just have to wait for them to cool. You don’t want them to be too hot for the dogs. My dogs dance around waiting for them to come out of the oven but I want to make sure they’re nice and cool for them. Once they cool down they should have a nice soft consistency to them.

These treats are only good for about two weeks because there is baby food in them. I usually keep them in a cookie jar (treat jar) and they are good for about two weeks and then you have to throw them out. But they’re so easy to make you can make another batch.

So definitely try this recipe out and thank you so much for reading my post. If you liked this post please give me thumbs up, leave me a comment or a vote. Thanks a million for reading my post and I’ll catch you wonderful people later!!

The Best Way To Potty Train A Puppy video where you get Puppy Potty Training and Dog Potty Training advice and tips.

Potty training your dog can be a frustrating task but patience and consistency can be great tools for a better potty training experience.

Training Tips:
1.) Accidents Happen! You should only scold or punish them if you catch them in the act.

Punishing your dog afterwards or rubbing their nose in their mess can be very confusing for your dog.

2.) When you take your dog out to go to potty try taking them to the same spot.

This will help teach your dog that this is where they should go. After they do go, be sure to give them lots of praise and love to let them know they did a good thing.

3.) Puppy crates are a positive thing for your dog; it is like their room or den. It is their space!

Refrain from using the crate as a way to punish your pet. When they are in the crate be attentive to your dog watch for warning signs that they need to go out.

4.) Refrain from using pee pads they can be confusing to your dog.

Pee pads may lead to them peeing on the carpet or blankets. You should always make time to take them outside because you want to teach them to only go outside.

The Best Way To Potty Train A Puppy video where you get Puppy Potty Training and Dog Potty Training advice and tips.

There are some very effective ways to get your dog potty trained or puppy house trained and it can be done in as little as 7 days with the correct advice, tips and training.

Train Any Dog With These General Dog Training Hints

Training a dog is crucial for having an obedient friend. There are good and bad points to dog training, but you’ll have more success if you acquaint yourself with a variety of techniques. Equip yourself by reading the piece that follows.

Leashes can be a new concept for puppies, so have them begin preparing for it by wearing a collar during playtime. It is important for the puppy to get used to the collar so it can be identified.

Your dog needs to pay attention to what you communicate. The guide above has outlined good tips that you could use in training your dog. Take your time and your dog will learn the appropriate behaviors. If you want a dog that listens you must be consistent with them.

Socialization with other people and pets is an important part of your dog’s training. Your dog needs to know how to act around other dogs and humans, and frequent socialization is the only way to teach these skills. This ensures their safety and the safety of others.

You can train a pooch to roll over fairly quickly if you have some treats to hand out. Start by getting the dog to lay down. Then hold the treat at the side of the dog’s head and move it around it’s face to the other side. He’ll follow your hand and roll over completely. Say the command, “roll over” when he rolls over. Be patient if they don’t get it right away; they’ll get it soon enough!

Make sure that your dog stays in a relaxed area. Play time is good to have with your pet, however, your dog should remain calm when you enter the room. Do not acknowledge the animal when you enter and by doing so, you create a controlled atmosphere in which you decide how and when play time begins.

If you follow these tips you should be on your way to having a potty trained pup in 7 days!

Summer may be your favorite time of year, but with it comes the heat, humidity and summer storms-all of which can be very hard on your dog. When planning your summer, it is important to remember your canine family members to make sure they make it through the summer happy and healthy.

“We see and hear of so many dogs every summer that get dangerously ill, or worse, by being placed in completely avoidable situations,” stated Liam Crowe, Bark Busters’ president, CEO and master trainer. “Many times the owners just don’t know any better, so educations is the first step in preventing our dogs from getting heat stroke, dehydration and other heat-related maladies.”

Depending on your experience level with dogs, below are either some new tips or some important reminders to keep your canine friends happy and safe during the summer months.

Heat

Heat can kill…and very quickly. Make sure your pet has plenty of cool, clean water. Do not dehydrate your pup by exercising it in the heat of the day. Save the run or long walk for early morning or late evening when it is cooler. Bring plenty of water with you and give him a drink whenever you take one. Be aware, too, that hot pavement can burn your dog’s paws. So if the pavement feels warm or hot to your hand, your dog will not like it. Dogs don’t have shoes to insulate their feet!

If your dog is spending time outside, make sure he has shade available to him along with plenty of cool, clean water. Provide two or more sources of water in case one gets knocked over. Your dog will also need shelter in the event of a sudden storm. He does not want to be out in the storm any more than you do. For his shelter, be sure to provide adequate ventilation because heat is a major cause of death in pets in the summer.

Cars and Trucks

Do not leave your dog in the car, even with the windows open. Heat buildup is tremendous, and it will not take long for him to overheat and suffer heat stroke. In less than 10 minutes, a car can reach over 120 degrees when it is only 80 degrees outside. Remember, your dog is wearing a fur coat. Think how you would feel if you were wearing fur at this time of the year!

Some dogs love to stick their heads out of the window to catch a breeze. It may look cute to you, but flying objects can injure your dog’s eyes and the constant flapping of his ears in the wind can harm them. Instead, crate or harness your dog to keep him safe. The back of a pickup is not a safe place for him. If untethered, he can jump or fall out, and even if he is tethered, he may get jerked around and injured during turns or sudden stops. He could also be hurt from the intense heat on the bed of a pickup.

Water

If your dog loves the water and loves to jump into the pool, make sure he knows how to get out safely. Dogs will instinctively try to get out at the same place they went in, so it is important to teach your dog or puppy where and how to get out of the pool regardless of where he went in. It is also important for you to keep an eye on him when he is in the pool because swimming is very tiring for a dog.

Be aware of the surrounding area if you take your dog to the beach, lake or pond. Watch for trouble and make sure your dog will come to you as soon as you call. Recall is one of the most important lessons you can teach your dog. It can literally save his life.

With a little planning and thought, we can help our dogs enjoy the summer and make it through without incident. We love our pets and want them to be with us for as long as possible.
