How To Teach Your Puppy To Drop Things

Are you getting frustrated with your puppy picking things up around the house and then not letting them go when asked? Does your puppy love playing with toys and maybe even playing fetch, but they don’t love the part where they give up that toy? In this post I’m gonna tell you exactly how to teach your puppy to drop things on the first command. Also I’m gonna let you in on a couple of the huge mistakes that people make when they’re teaching their puppy to drop things that make the puppy forever dependent on food. We want your puppy to respond the first time, every time, and in this post I’m going to tell you exactly how to do that.

Using A House Line

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so it’s really a good idea for you to put a house line on your puppy when they have some freedom in your home. This is especially important when you’re trying to work on some of these behaviors where you need your puppy to relinquish an item. You’re puppy is going to find that object really gratifying so giving you that extra little bit of control by using a house line can be really, really powerful.

Now, if you’re not sure what a house line is a house line is a lead with a clip but without a handle that is about 8 feet long. It can be used to prevent bad behavior, to stop unwanted behavior fast, and to help you teach your dog good manners. You attach the house line to your dog’s collar (this collar should be an ordinary flat collar and not a slip or choke collar) and let it drop onto the floor and trail along the ground.

The house line is put on before exciting events or whenever your dog will need to learn good habits. You’re going to start this exercise with an interactive toy. Since we’re teaching our puppy to drop things, regardless of what those things are, we want to be able to have a little bit more control. This is very important as your puppy is learning this process.

Pick A Toy and a Treat

We’re not really teaching your puppy to specifically drop a ball, a sock or any other particular item. We just want your puppy to learn exactly what to do every time they hear you say drop it. So you want you to choose something that is a little bit interactive. Maybe it’s a rope tug toy or maybe it’s a fabric Frisbee. It doesn’t really matter what the thing is. Having said that, I don’t want you to start with your puppy’s favorite toy. It’s going to make it a little bit more challenging to convince them at first that it is a good idea to drop their favorite toy. Also that whatever we’re trading for is worth it.

So it is best to pick something that’s of moderate value to your puppy. But make sure it’s something that’s interactive and that you can control as well. You’re going to use a trade system to teach your puppy to drop things, and it’s going to rely on your timing, which we’ll talk about in just a moment. But I want you to find a food that your puppy really likes. Maybe it’s steak or cheese or chicken or something like that. If you have a puppy who loves playing with toys, picking up things and holding onto them I would probably start with one of these higher value foods.

Timing Is Important

Avoid something like kibble at this point. You really want to get your puppy into the habit of hearing that word and then dropping that item. Using something that they really love, that’s really good smelling or that they think tastes really good is a great way to do that. Practicing this exercise at a mealtime is also a really great way to increase the value of the food. Your puppy’s going to be really excited about the exchange because they’re a little bit hungry. They will be thrilled about getting that food in exchange for dropping that toy. As with a lot of exercises in dog training, timing’s really important for your puppy to learn this skill.

Watch Your Presentation

A lot of people become dependent on having a cookie, a toy, a treat or something to trade for in their hand. But here is what happens in that case. If you do this your puppy knows that you always have food, etc in your hand. Then before you say drop it and you go to give them the reward you’re starting to condition them that the only time they need to listen is when they see the food. They know that they won’t have to give up something unless you go to the pantry and grab a cookie of theirs and then say drop it.

So here’s what I want you to focus on. Give that puppy one second between when you say drop it and when you present the food, so it allows your puppy to register that information. And then all of a sudden, by surprise, the food is presented. So you’re gonna think the word then in your head. I want you to think drop it, then present the food. I love to use something like a bait pouch or maybe like a loose-fitting sweater or something that I can kinda hide those treats in before presenting my puppy with that food trade.

Conditioning The Response

Now this is going to allow you to start to condition the puppy to respond to that command knowing that in one second, before they actually see the food, they’re going to drop it. So it’s going to be drop it, then present the food. Training the skill this way keeps us from having to go get food and wave something really delicious in front of our puppy’s face for them to release that item. It really trains your puppy to hear that word and then one second later, respond.

This is a really great opportunity for me to talk about controlling that object or controlling that toy, whatever you’re using. This is why we want to use an interactive toy. Controlling that item is going to be really important so that your puppy can’t decide to move a couple of feet away or maybe go hide behind the couch or not engage with you. It’s really important that you’re able to reinforce that command or reinforce that drop it command for your puppy. So I want you to hold the toy, and here’s the key to holding the toy. I want you to hold it still.

Controlling The Toy

Puppies will find it really gratifying to play a game of tug with you with the toy. It’s really important that you’re not accidentally continuing the game of tug as you’re teaching your puppy to drop it. It’s just too much fun. Also a good idea is to maybe brace the toy on your leg. Or if you’re sitting down you can brace it on your knee. Whatever it is, take some of the fun and excitement out of that toy by making it absolutely still before you ask your puppy to drop it.

If you have a puppy who’s completely committed to playing the game of tug even though you’ve braced the object or kept the item really, really still, you can always put your food away and gently take your puppy’s collar. You’re just going to hang onto their collar and hold them still while you hold the toy still. They’re gonna figure out pretty quickly that this game isn’t fun anymore, and then they’ll release the object. So at that point, you can praise them and tell them what a good job they’ve done, but do not feed them at this point.

Reduce The Length Of The Game

The next time you’re going to try this exercise, I don’t want you to play tug with them as long. Don’t give them that toy for as long a period of time. We don’t want to get them into that mental state yet where they reach the state of mind that this toy is just an absolute blast and they’re not interested in food. So I might give them that item again and very soon after, tell them drop it, present the food one second later, and see what sort of results you get. Depending on the puppy, you might also need to reduce the value of the toy.

Some Variables To Consider

Maybe this toy is too great a challenge, or maybe you need to find a better food trade. Maybe they don’t really want cheese at this point but something like steak can be a real advantage to you. But understanding what you’re dog is finding gratifying and understanding when they’ve reached that point of no return where they don’t want to release that toy anymore is gonna be really important for your training. After a few sessions of your drop it training, you might start to see your puppy drop things really quickly.

So if you say drop it and before you’ve even gone into your bait pouch or gotten that food out, your puppy has dropped the item, I want you to jackpot reward them. Really mark the moments where they’ve put in an extra effort, and really acknowledge the fact that they’re getting faster. You can start to differentiate those great responses with the ones that are pretty good. So really highlight those moments for your puppy when they’ve done a really, really great job. Puppies can be really situational, so I want you to practice this exercise in different areas of your home, maybe outside versus inside.

Change up Your Training

I want you to practice it with different items. You know, at this point, I really want to reinforce the fact that using an interactive toy, something like a rope tug or a Frisbee or whatever is really advantageous. Because we can control it, we can make it less fun if we need to. But keep in mind that practicing it all over the house, practicing it outside with different items is going to very quickly transfer into your puppy understanding the word, the drop it command, versus dropping a Frisbee when they come back each time.

In Conclusion

So every time, whether it’s a sock or a tennis ball, doesn’t matter what the thing is, when your puppy hears drop it, they know exactly what to do. With repetition and some good timing, you’ll be able to level up your drop it training.

If you like this puppy training post please give me a thumbs up, leave me a comment or a vote. Thanks a million for reading my post and I’ll catch you wonderful people later!!

First Week Puppy Training – The 6 Skills To Teach First

The first week home for a new puppy is a very impressionable time. And when puppy training there are a few exercises that you should be doing with your new puppy during their first week home that will really help speed up the learning process. In this post I’m going to teach you six exercises that you can do with your new puppy that will help them become a well-behaved four-legged family member who loves to listen.
Now the first thing you need to keep in mind is that puppies have tiny bellies and they also have really short attention spans. So as you’re working with your puppy for the first couple of weeks, keep those puppy training sessions really short and take advantage of all the natural puppy training opportunities that are presented to you. For us, we’ll often portion out a little bit of the puppies food, whether it’s their breakfast or lunch or dinner or whatever and use that for puppy training. We know that we have a motivated dog to work for food because it’s their feeding time and we’re also not giving our puppy too much food over the course of the day.

1.) Response To Their Name

The first thing I want to talk about in puppy training is the response to their name. Now, before your puppy knows their name, it’s just a word, they’ve never heard it before. So we need to do something to build value on that word. The first thing we’re going to do for the first few repetitions is just say their name then reward them. And it goes a little something like this, I’ll say, Fido, then reward. Fido, then reward. Fido, then reward. Now I’m making it really easy for Fido and I’m building value on that word. But in just a few sessions you’ll be able to make it a little bit more challenging for your puppy.

2.) Response To Their Name With Distractions

Now here’s where we’re going to increase the challenge of that response name a little bit for your puppy. I want you to wait for a moment when your puppy’s distracted. This probably won’t take that long because puppies are naturally pretty distracted by all of the things in their environment.

So have a few treats in hand. When your puppy gets distracted, call their name and put a treat on their nose, turn them in toward you and reward when your puppy is facing you. That way they’re gonna start to understand that every time they hear their name they need to turn in toward you. And I’ll show you how it goes, kind of like this. I’ll get her distracted. Fido. I’ll turn her toward me. Yes, good girl. So do that a few times. And I’ll try it again. Hippy. Turn her toward me. Yes, good girl, very nice. Fido. Turn her toward me. Yes, good girl. Fido is starting to understand that every time she hears her name she needs to turn toward me because something good is about to happen.
Now something you need to keep in mind is that when you’ve got your puppy at home avoid using their name all the time unless you’re training this exercise. The last thing you want to do is water down how important that word is.

So we use something like, “Here, pup, pup, pup.” or “Here, here, here.” or something like that until we’re ready to train our puppy’s name and that way that name is always something valuable. Another thing that we like to do for the response to name training is after you’ve had a few successful repetitions of turning your puppy away from a distraction, you and a partner will sit at either end of a hallway and one person will hold the puppy and get them really excited. The other person will have some food and they might use some exciting language to really keep the puppy’s focus and keep their attention. Then they’ll call the puppy’s name and that partner will release the puppy down to them. It really builds motivation and drive for an excited response to their name.

3.) Accustomed to Their Collar

In those first few days of your puppy coming home, make sure you have an opportunity to get them accustomed to their collar. Now, when you pop your puppy’s new collar on for the first couple times, they may itch and scratch at it and it’s just them getting used to it, it’s like you wearing a new pair of glasses or something like that. But it’s going to be important down the road for you to keep your puppy safe, keep your young dog safe.

Make sure that you can have a collar on them safely and you can clip a leash to it. And even more importantly, be able to put on a house line if needed.

4.) Get An Interactive Toy

Puppies explore the world with their mouths, so a great way to engage with them is by using something like an interactive toy. I’ve got a Bungee Tug. The other great thing is for those of you who want to do dog sports in the future or you want your dog to have a great retrieve or a fetch.

Having a toy driving your dog is going to be really important. The other great thing that you can start doing with your puppy is laying the foundation for their “Stop”. By engaging with the toy and then presenting some food, Fido’s gonna start to learn what the stop command means. So let’s get started. With your puppy I want you to get that interactive toy and animate it on the ground.

Make it look really exciting, so that your puppy get gets interested in it. So when your puppy gets a hold of that toy and it seems really excited about it, you’re gonna say, “Stop” and then you can present the food.

We’ll try it one more time to get her even more excited. Ready? Tug, tug, tug, tug, tug. You can see how much she loves playing this game. I’m gonna tell her “Stop” and then present the food. The great part about using these interactive toys is that not only does your dog have fun playing with the toy but they begin to understand that the toy is only fun when they get to play with it with you.

5.) Luring Exercises

Now another exercise to always do with our young puppies are some luring exercises. That’s simply teaching our puppy to follow food. Now following food is going to be really helpful if you want to train your dog to do any tricks or you want to teach your puppy to walk on a loose leash. It’s even helpful for things like the down and sit command. But with our puppies, as they’re eight, nine, 10 weeks old, we’re just going to lure them around a little bit. And when they really commit to that food, we might make it as challenging or as easy as your puppy is capable of following.

We’re just going to lure them around, we’re not gonna give them any commands, we’re not going to ask them to do anything. All they need to do is follow that food. Now if your puppy gets distracted easily or doesn’t like, seems to not be that interested in the food. You might need to reward them a little more frequently or pick a little higher value food reward.

Now don’t make it too tough, you just want to maybe turn your puppy a little bit. Yes, and reward. You might want to… Let’s see if I can get Hippy Shake to just move around. She went into a down position. I can, yes, reward her. We’re not really looking for anything specific but we definitely want our puppies to follow this food. Okay, these luring exercises are really going to help you down the road with some of your obedience training.

6.) A Positive Association With Their Crate

Now we often talk about the value of a crate when you’re training a puppy. Whether you’re using it as a safe place for your puppy for when you aren’t able to supervise them. Or you’re using it as a limited space area so that you can speed up their potty training. The crate is a really useful tool. Now, something we need to do with our puppies is have them build a positive association with that crate. And a great way to do that is by feeding your puppy each of their meals inside the crate. So I’m just gonna tell Hippy Shake, “Okay” and then I’m gonna put her dinner inside here.

So by doing these exercises in the first few weeks that you bring your puppy home, you’re really starting to lay the foundation of learning for your puppy. You’re also beginning to understand how they like to learn. This can be a really helpful tool when you’re training them.

Dog training is a wonderful experience and will leave you with lasting memories of having spent a good deal of time with your pet. Training your favorite pet will make it easy for you to handle things, especially when you are residing in an urban location. The basic things that you will need to train your dog for include basic toilet training, and following other simple instructions like retrieving stuff, eating, etc.

There are many more exciting things you can teach your dog to do. For instance, kneel down, heel, jump on toes, and it is also quite possible to make the pet stay in your complete command. However, teaching advanced instructions to dogs is slightly tricky and it is best to seek professional help for this.

There are many other reasons for you to go for professional dog obedience training. Such training uses techniques developed by expert pet dog trainers, and are easy for your pet to follow, learn, and memorize. The two most important factors that you need to consider in dog obedience training is the age your dog, and its breed.

The dog breed plays an important part in training efforts. Different breeds have different characteristic features that are a result of their genetic characters. For instance, there are some things that only retrievers can do best. You try teaching those to Labradors and your efforts will rarely succeed. There are other dog characters too that need to be accounted for while devising training techniques. For instance, Labradors feed voraciously, unlike promerians. These are just some of the reasons as to why you might want to make use of professional dog obedience training courses.

There are many ways of seeking professional dog training help, and the best place is the internet. Using the internet allows you the benefit of accessing almost an endless volume of resources and information on the topic you want, and all this at your own pace and leisure time. Most professional dog training websites have informative articles for you that can greatly improve your dog training experience.

These websites also offer numerous training guide and dog obedience tutorials for users. Using training courses will let you take your dog training efforts to the next level. Imagine your completely spoilt dog adhering by your every instruction sincerely! No more torn clothes and carpets, or spilled cans in the house; no mess to clean and you have happy dog too. Nothing can be more wishful for a frustrated pet dog owner who loves his dog but would also like more discipline and zero hassles.

Most individuals get great pleasure out of having an animal friend they could enjoy the company of, on a regular basis. When these relationships oftentimes help build strong bonds, there are trials which the pet and even owner must go through together, in order to help fortify all these bonds. One possibility that a person can take a good benefit of, in order to attain this objective is with the usage of dog training techniques. While looking at the opportunities that exist with these techniques, an individual can discover four specific benefits that prove helpful to both pet and even owner.

First Benefit: Establishing Boundaries

Its important to recognize that when you have a new pet, they are most often not properly trained as well as are very unaware of any boundaries that may exist. Pet owners may continuously find themselves yelling, without creating a clear awareness for the animal of what is acceptable and even what is unacceptable. Taking a good benefit of dog training guides, allow you to establish those boundaries, such as going to the bathroom outside, so that you can create a very pleasant relationship between you and your dog.

Second Benefit: Bonding

The very next benefit found with the usage of dog training techniques, exists with the bond which is created. When individuals make the choice to pursue training on their own, they’ll be able to establish a unique bond with their pets, which is often lost to many pet owners who pursue the resources of professional dog training.

Third Benefit: Improving Social Etiquette

The third benefit created through the utilization of dog training guides is found with an improvement in social etiquette. A huge number of pet owners enjoy taking their dogs on walks or with them in many different social settings, and properly training your dog will allow them to be aware of the proper etiquette, when accompanying a person in public. By not establishing this etiquette, a person can often become highly embarrassed by the behavior of their pet friend.

Fourth Benefit: Establishing Control

The last benefit is found with the opportunity of establishing control. Dog training techniques will show that while its always pleasant to have a symbiotic relationship with the pet, its important that you display your dominance, such that your pet obeys commands. This can be done through a wide variety of different techniques and identifying the best technique for your pet to understand will help in providing the control you desire.

The opportunity created with dog training guides, will enable any individual to take advantage of the benefits created with establishing boundaries, bonding, improving social etiquette, and establishing control.
