Chihuahua Puppy And Dog Information

The Chihuahua is considered the smallest dog in the world. She is smart, and an excellent choice for an apartment. She may not be good with very young children as she is fragile. She is a great companion and is generally happy to live with other pets. She is a very good watch dog.

*Good With Children? Yes, she is good with older, gentle, behaved children. As a reminder, never leave a young child unsupervised with a puppy or dog.
*Good With Other Pets? Yes, she is good with other pets.
*Approximate Adult Size. The approximate adult size (two years old or older) of the Chihuahua is 6 to 9 inches to the withers (highest point of the shoulder) and 2 to 6 pounds.
*Special Health Considerations. Most dog breeds have certain inherited health problems associated with that specific breed and the Chihuahua is no exception. Be on the look out for corneal dryness, dislocating kneecaps and collapsing trachea. This disease list is an informative guideline only. Other diseases may also be significant threats, please contact your veterinarian for a complete list.
She should visit the veterinarian several times in the first year for shots, boosters and check up. Then, as an adult, she should visit the veterinarian yearly for shots and check up. As she gets older, six years and on, she should visit the veterinarian twice a year for check ups and shots. Remember; avoid feeding your dog sweets.
*Grooming. The Chihuahua has two coat varieties, short/smooth and long/soft. She should be brushed regularly. Brushing will help her maintain a clean and healthy coat and help you keep a closer eye on her health and strengthen your emotional bond with her. Bathe monthly and keep water out of her ears.
Her teeth should be brushed at least twice a week with toothpaste and toothbrush designed for dogs. Brushing removes the accumulation of plaque and tartar which can cause cavities (rarely) and periodontal disease. Dog periodontal disease can lead to pain, loss of teeth, bad breath and other serious disease.
Her toenails may need to be examined for growth and clipped regularly. The toenails of the rear feet grow slower than the toenails of the front feet.
*Life Span. The Chihuahua can live between 13 and 16 years with proper nutrition, medical care and excellent living conditions.
*Chihuahua History. The Chihuahua has a clouded origin, some saying that they are from the Aztecs, some Egyptian and some say they are from Mexican Toltecs. The modern discovery of this breed was in Mexico about 100 years ago. They were first registered by the American Kennel Association in 1904.

Some Registries:
*Chihuahua Club of America
*UKC United Kennel Club
*NKC National Kennel Club
*CKC Continental Kennel Club
*APRI Americas Pet Registry Inc.
*AKC American Kennel Club
*FCI Federation Cynologique Internationale
*NZKC New Zealand Kennel Club
*KCGB = Kennel Club of Great Britain
*ANKC = Australian National Kennel Club
*ACR = American Canine Registry

Litter Size: 1 to 4 Chihuahua puppies

Category: Southern

Terms To Describe: Swift, alert, graceful, saucy, bold, playful,

   *SPECIAL GOOD POINTS
Very good watch dog.
Great companion dog.
Needs little exercise
*SPECIAL BAD POINTS
She may tend to snore.
She does not like cold.
Can be very noisy.
Can be difficult to housebreak.
Not a guard dog.

*Every dog is an individual so not everything in this information may be correct for your dog. This information is meant as a good faith guideline only.

?chihuahua Puppy Training the Easy Way in 5 Simple Steps?

Let’s make it fun for you and the new member of your family…”Your beautiful Chihuahua Puppy”. Just follow the 5 simple and easy to apply steps listed below and you’ll have yourself a well balanced, loving and sociable dog in the future.

Step # 1: House Training.

Your little puppy is just like a little baby meaning he will want to relieve himself regularly, usually around every 45 minutes or so… Your puppy will want to go to the toilet after drinking, sleeping, playing and especially if he is excited.

After he’s had a drink take him outside and wait with him until he has done his business, he might go straight away or it could take some time, so be patient with him and try not to take him back in until he’s done his business. If you take him in to early and let him do the deed inside, he will form the habit of waiting to back in and that will not be good for either of you.

The same goes for sleeping. After his nap just go through the cycle above, if you are going to play with him and get him excited then the best place to do it is outside as he will pee without any warning at all. Through constant repetition always try to take him to a designated place to do his business so that he gets a feel for where he should go. Associating him to the outside as the place to go to the toilet will eventually become the norm for him and soon you will find that he will whine, bark or scratch at the door when he does need to go.

Step # 2: Socialization.

Any dog not properly socialized especially from a young age, becomes a liability to all he comes into contact with and it’s the owners duty of care to ensure that their dog is approachable and safe, not only for the dogs sake but for the owners and the general public also.

Socialization like all aspects of training is best done when the dog is young of around 12 weeks old. Socializing him is not difficult and can be fun for you and him. What we must not forget is that your dog, or any dog for that matter, no matter what the breed, essentially deep down, wants to be sociable as this offers him security.

It is imperative that he sees other humans as friends and not something he should be fearful of, so with that said, the easy way to socialize him would be to take him everywhere you go within the boundaries of limitation and let everyone you meet, touch, stroke and caress him…He’ll love the attention.

Socialization should be a pleasant experience for him and one great trick is to carry a bag of his favorite treats with you and when you introduce him to other people, hand them one of his treats for them to give to him, this way he becomes accustomed to other peoples hands and sees them as something not to be fearful of. Introduce him to other animals, being mindful that the other animals you introduce him to are fit and healthy…Do Not however try to introduce him to any dogs that are roaming free as an attack from such an animal will cause no amount of set backs.

Take him for long walks in the park, have other members of the family, friends and their children brush him and take him for walks. Take him regularly to have his nails clipped and his teeth cleaned. All this type of handling will ensure that you will have a well balanced dog in the future knowing that he has nothing to fear from humans and if he has nothing to fear from humans there is no need for him to go on the defense.

Step # 3: Nipping and Biting.

Puppies as part of their learning curve and socialization procedure instinctively will nip and bite, it forms part of their play time, communication and social standing, but does this make it okay for them to do it? Well yes and no! Puppies will nip and bite regardless, as it is part of their generic make up, which goes on to form their social standing within the group to which they are part of.

It is important that you establish who the boss is right away, now I don’t mean you do this in an aggressive manner, on the contrary, an affirmative NO while pointing your finger at him and making eye contact will be enough to get the message across. You should include members of your family and friends to take part also. Obviously you are not going to stop him nipping and biting at your first attempt, so repetition is the key here, so it may take a little time, patience will be your key to success on this one. If you don’t nip this one in the bud at the outset it will cause many problems down the road and he will not be a very nice dog to be around when he is older, he has to learn to play by the rules…Period.

Step # 4: Chewing.

The little blighters it seems will chew just about anything they can get their little razor sharp, needle-like teeth on. The new pair of slippers granny bought you last year has took on a whole new function. They are no longer there to keep your feet warm, oh no, they are there to be shaken, tossed, thrown around the room, torn and snarled at. What about the carpet you just had laid, those few protruding strands are just too much to resist.

But why do they do it? Well apart from it being fun, there are a number of other factors to take into consideration such as teething. It must be awful for them cutting their teeth and so relief comes in the form of chewing.

The solution for this would be to give them a variety of different toys of different shapes and textures to play with, these toys can be quite varied from hard and soft rubber bones and balls, an old shirt or skirt (buttons and zips taken off please), squeaky toys, your brand new slippers (just kidding) you just have to use your imagination and of course your common sense.

I have heard it suggested that a ball of rope would be useful, but in my opinion rope strands can be swallowed and could cause stomach or intestine problems not to mention give you a hefty vet bill? Common sense is the number one rule here.

Our aim in providing such toys is to create a diversion tactic from your clothing and furniture onto something that is okay for then to destroy. Most of the chewing will be done when you are out or in bed so just make sure there are plenty of other things for him to concentrate on by scattering his toys all over the place.

Step # 5: Barking.

Consistent and continual barking is socially unacceptable, so I will to give you a few tips here that should help you greatly to quell this behavior.

Lack of stimulation can play a big part in his continual barking, so are you spending enough time with him, does he have enough play things and does he receive enough exercise, what about his environment?

Puppies along with adult dogs can become quite lonely if you spend a lot of time away from them. They need interaction and stimulation. No one would like to shut up alone in a room all day or night or tethered to a pole with nothing to occupy the mind, it would be enough to drive you stir crazy and your dog is no different, so spend quality time with him. If he feels he’s had the attention he needs he will quite happily relax, sleep and occupy himself, but only if he has had some part of you during the day.

What about his play things are they stimulating enough or are they old, bland and boring, does he have enough, and are they of different shapes, sizes and textures, are they replaced often? I’m afraid only you can answer that one. Just make sure he’s got enough to occupy himself with when you are not around.

Are you tiring him out enough, do you take him for long walks, runs in the park or play ball with him? After a session with you does he come back panting gasping for a drink? Regular and consistent exercise is not only good for him; it’s good for you too. Good regular exercise is life changing for your dog and if you are consistent with it, you will have one happy bunny on your hands.

His environment can also play a big part in his continual barking, are there other dogs in your area that are continually barking if so, this could be a trigger for him to communicate with what is going on in the outside world, or is he being teased? Have a look and listen for any one or combination of factors; once you have recognized the problem, then you know there is something you can do about it. Have you changed house? A new location may be a little unsettling for him, in which case, you will need to take him out often until he becomes accustom with his new surroundings.

Consistency, perseverance, patience and gentle reinforcement are the key ingredients to having a well balanced obedient, well behaved dog. If that is the dog of your dreams then don’t blame or shame him, instead…Train Him.

Tips for Caring Your chihuahua Puppies

All food should be fully cooked and cooled before feeding. Chihuahua owners who have a personal preference to feed their Chihuahua puppies with home cooked food should keep in mind that all food has to be cooked and should consist of a meat protein, carbohydrates and a vegetable. It is thus, important for owners of Chihuahuas to be equipped with proper knowledge and tips for caring for their Chihuahua pups.

Chihuahua Puppies should be given adequate nutrition with two meals a day. Chihuahua owners should spend time familiarizing their Chihuahua pups to the surroundings and their living environments by letting the pup roam freely around the house and facilitating interaction with the family as well as other pets in the house. Chocolates are harmful to Chihuahuas in any amount and may prove fatal if given in large amounts. Plenty of water should be given to ensure sufficient hydration and unfinished food should be disposed off after each meal to prefer the growth of bacteria and germs which might potentially cause illness to the Chihuahua pup.

Popular meat choices include beef, lamb, chicken and pork while vegetables include carrot and peas. In general, unstable objects should not be placed around the house to prevent death and injuries. It is necessary for Chihuahua owners to start socialization with their Chihuahua pups before they turn full grown. Grain choices vary according to culture. This is to prevent objects such as radios from crashing onto the puppy should it trip over such wires.

While not an easy task, the process of doing so would definitely result in wonderful memories in time to come. This would allow the Chihuahua puppy to adapt easily into its new living environment, preventing aggressive behavior in future. Chihuahua puppies should be taken to regular visits to the vet. Do not hesitate to bring your Chihuahua puppy to the vet if such symptoms are observed. Safety issues are a necessary area for Chihuahua owners to look into.

Electrical outlets should be switched off and covered with plastic guards when not in use to prevent Chihuahua puppies from licking these dangerous areas. Responsible Chihuahua owners make a checklist on these aspects in order to ensure the overall well being of their Chihuahua pups. Care for Chihuahua pups covers many aspects and includes socialization, safety, nutrition and health. Popular choices include potatoes or rice. This is to ensure that the puppies are in good health, receiving adequate nutrition as well as for vaccination against illnesses such as Parvo. Sufficient nutrition is necessary in order to prevent illnesses and ensure healthy gum, skin and coat.

Small in stature, Chihuahuas are relatively fragile dogs. Regular walks are also necessary to ensure healthy development of the puppy’s limbs as well as to prevent obesity. Cables should be shortened if possible, and kept when not in use to prevent the Chihuahua puppy from tripping over them. Dried dog food is preferable as it prefers tartar and plaque from accumulating in the young puppy’s teeth. Appliances around the home such as electrical outlets; cables and vases can present potential dangers to Chihuahua pups. Never ever feed your Chihuahua puppy with chocolate. Raising a Chihuahua requires effort and commitment. Symptoms of chocolate poisoning include diarrhea, vomiting and excessive thirst. Relatively inexperienced Chihuahua owners should also get advice from the vet with regards to their Chihuahua pups well being. So take these steps for your Chihuahua Care and make healthy fully grown chihuahua.

As lively animals, Chihuahuas tend to come into constant contact with their owners, family members as well as other pets that its owner might have. This is to ensure less aggressive behavior in the future when the Chihuahua pup turns into a full grown Chihuahua.

What Chihuahua Puppy Really Makes Your Heart Race?

According to the AKC standard a Chihuahua should not exceed 6 pounds. In real life, however, they do. Some Chihuahuas weigh in at 10 pounds or more. Some Chihuahua have longer legs and are lighter boned that is described in the AKC standard. Their muzzles tend to be longer and they have a more “deerlike” look. This type of Chihuahua is labeled a “deer type Chihuahua.” The deer type Chihuahua may have some advantages as a pet. They tend to be better walking companion and they fare better in obedience trials. They are less susceptible to hypoglycemia. However, if you want a “true” Chihuahua you can show or breed, then you need to get one within the standard. If you want a “true” Chihuahua you can love, get whatever appeals to you the most.

Some Chihuahuas are at the other end of not so perfect according to the AKC standards weighing in at as little as 2 pounds. A 2 pound Chihuahua is unofficially named “teacup” or “pocket” Chihuahuas. They are not a separate type of Chihuahua but simply unusually small specimens of the breed. They are somewhat more fragile and vulnerable to hypoglycemia, but not at all “unhealthy” or full of health problems just because they are smaller.

Coat

Chihuahuas come in two coat types: Smooth coat and the less familiar long coat. Neither coat type is difficult to care for or requires long hours of careful grooming. Both types can be seen within the same litter. The long coat is not thick and requires minimal brushing of about 2 times per week. Neither coat type sheds a lot.

Color

Chihuahuas can be solid colored or parti-colored (spotted). The color pattern can be clear, sabled (dark-tipped hairs), masked, or brindled (color broken up by irregular vertical dark stripes). The shade can be basically black or diluted shades of chocolate, blue, or red or its diluted shades of gold or cream, or white.

Sex

Females tend to be smaller than males. Both males and females tend to get along well together. Some people think males may be slightly sweeter. Each has their own adversities with sex hormones and adult sexual maturity. The solution for both sexes is neutering or spaying.

Age

Most people tend to look for a puppy when adding a pet to the family. However, puppies are not for everyone. They are cute and fun, but they are also an incredible amount of work. Chihuahua puppies are more fragile than other breeds. Hypoglycemia is more prevalent especially among the teeny tiny Chihuahuas. Of they miss one meal or overexert themselves they can go into hypoglycemia very quickly.

Many Chihuahua breeders will not send a Chihuahua pup to a new home until the pup reaches at least 10 weeks of age. This is extra work for the breeder, but a breeder who is willing to take on this extra work for you, the consumer, is a breeder worth waiting for or seeking out.

The Importance of Puppy Training

Puppy training is an important aspect of owning and raising a pup. However many people do not fully understand the importance of puppy training. It is not meant to turn your pup into some kind of robot who follows commands accurately and mindlessly. It is also not aimed to make your puppy into a show dog that can do tricks to amuse your friends. Puppy training is all about making the bond between you and your pup stronger. It is about teaching your pup the basic rules to make him/her a safer pet as well as a pleasant companion.

Puppy training is not about subduing your pup to follow your every whim; it is about communication. Regardless of your purpose for owning a puppy, whether it is for company or for protection, you should train your pup so that you will not have any behavioral problems with it in the future. Puppy training will turn your frisky puppy to a more docile dog that will obey your command and stay away from trouble.

Puppy training is highly recommended regardless of your lifestyle or the breed of your pup. It is also recommended to start training your dog while still a puppy. This is because older dogs are more difficult to train. Sometimes, different dog breeds may require different dog training techniques. For instance, you can’t use the same technique to train a large Great Dane and tiny Chihuahua.

Simple puppy training starts with obedience training. First, your puppy must recognize his/her name and be responding to it every time you call it out. You can then start to train him/her to come to you whenever you call him/her. Use the verbal commands come and here when you are calling him/her. Then you can start introducing some other techniques such as the sit command. You should start with the simple commands first and gradually advance to more complicated commands.

The importance of puppy training is a disciplined and docile companion who can follow simple commands and keep away from trouble such as destroying your neighbors flower patch. Also, the goal of puppy training is to make your pup safer, not only to you and your family, but also to everyone in your neighborhood. This is especially important if you have a large pup that can be capable of damage or injury. A trained pup will simply not run off to chase a cat and will not be aggressive to other pets, children and adults.

Puppy training is not easy. You have to possess patience and perseverance to be always consistent in your commands so that your pup will learn faster and more effectively. You should also respect your pup. Remember that you chose him/her and he/she didn’t choose you. You should treat him/her right in the first place, because if you don’t you will end up with an unhappy puppy who will likely run away from you and be quite difficult to train.

If you are truly determined to train your puppy personally, you can find a lot of resource material on puppy training in many books, manuals, pamphlets and others. It may be helpful to get some information about puppy training even before you get a puppy. Sometimes pet shops will offer puppy obedience training either for free or for a fee. Just make sure that it is attuned to the requirements of your puppies breed. You can also hire a professional puppy trainer to assist you in training your beloved pet.

The happiness and safety of you, your pet, and the people around you is important. By responsibly taking care of your puppy and educating your puppy, you can prevent dog bites. Follow the links to a great training secrets.http://R-Rdogtraining.blogspot.com

Choosing a Chihuahua Puppy

He or she should be a tiny dog with a fairly stocky build. The head of a Chihuahua is rounded; the muzzle is short and not squashed in. A Chihuahua’s ears stand erect. As young Chihuahuas, the ears will be floppy. The eyes are large. If you want to show or breed your Chihuahua you will want to choose according to the standard of perfection set by the American Kennel Club.

A passionate Chihuahua breeder will have photos of the sire and dam as well as the entire family. The appearance of the sire and dame of the litter is the best predictor of the looks of their offspring.

Examine the pedigree for conformation champions. You can get a good idea of how well your dog’s ancestors conform to the official AKC standards.

A Good Temperament

The temperament of a Chihuahua should be alert with terrier like qualities according to the AKC standard. One of the reasons why the Chihuahua has earned a position as one of the most popular breeds is partly due to its stable temperament. The personality of the sire and dam will help predict the personality of their offspring.

A Chihuahua is usually reserved with strangers. They should not be afraid or aggressive. However, a dam with very young puppies will almost always act aggressive as a means of protecting her offspring. If you visit a litter of Chihuahua when they are very young, and witness an aggressive dam, revisit when the litter is older.

Obedience or agility titles on the pedigree indicate obedient ancestors and also breeders who care about temperament.

You want your Chihuahua to live as a housedog and companion. Choose puppies raised in a home as opposed to those raised in a garage, a cage out back or a mass-production puppy farm.

Good Health

How old have the relatives of your chosen Chihuahua puppy lived? A good guide to the health of a Chihuahua is the health of her or his ancestors. Are there veterinary certifications of health clearances, such as the heart, eye, and especially, patella certifications, available? These certifications add assurance that your pup’s parents are free of certain hereditary disorders. Breeders can’t predict or prevent every disease, but they can try to give you the best chance of sharing a long and active life with your new friend.

Chihuahua Puppy Is Coming Home

You have purchased your Chihuahua puppy and now preparing to bring it home. You want your new family member to feel comfortable in its new home and you want your home to survive this new family member. How should you prepare?

First of all decide which part of your home will be off-limits. It will be better for your new Chihuahua to allow freer reign as he ages rather than to suddenly no longer allow him where he once could go.

Chihuahuas seem to like to perch on high places while surveying its surroundings. A Chihuahua can be severely injured jumping off high places. As a general rule if they can’t jump up to a place by themselves, they shouldn’t jump down from that place. You can make a ramp that leads to favorite lookouts or nesting spots.

You need to prepare for a new Chihuahua puppy just as you need to prepare for a new baby, with some changes of course. Furnish your home with Chihuahua “stuff” as the next step toward making your house his home. Some sources for supplies are large pet stores, dog shows, discount pet catalogs and the internet.

Toys

Fleece-type toys, balls, stuffed animals…..make sure no part of the toy including squeakers or plastic eyes can be pulled out or swallowed.

Chew bones

A chew bone is the equivalent of a teething ring for babies.

Food and water bowls

Avoid plastic, which can cause allergic reactions in some dogs. The best food dishes are stainless steel and for water, use a water bottle.

Food

Start with the same food the pup is currently eating. If you change his food, do this gradually.

Soft buckle collar

A cat collar may work better for Chihuahua puppies.

Lightweight leash

An adjustable show lead is good for puppies.

Grooming

Soft brush

Clothes

According to your climate, you may need sweaters, coats or fleece t-shirts. Purchase stylish lightweight shirts for warmer climates.

Accessories

Chihuahuas look nice in necklaces pearl or jewels with fancy charms. Experiment with different looks and have fun with the accessories you choose to compliment your Chihuahua’s clothes.

Dog shampoo is essential to have on hand for your new puppy. Use guillotine type nail clippers. A first aid kit is also helpful.

Other Items to have on hand include but are not limited to: baby gates, dog beds, a crate, X-pen or playpen, fenced outdoor area, doggy door, poop scoop (a two-piece rake type is best for grass.)

Identification: A license tag is a good means of ID, but large tags should be avoided. A tag made of a brass plate fit snug to the collar is best. Collars can come off and dogs aren’t always wearing them when they’re lost. Microchips are proving to be very successful for tracing lost dogs. Your vet injects a microchip about the size of a grain of rice just over the dog’s shoulders. There are special readers that pass over the dog to read the owner’s information from the chip.

Nobody plans to lose a dog. Those who plan ahead with proper identification have a better chance of finding a lost dog.

When it comes to Chihuahua puppy training, you definitely need to be calm and patient. This breed is easily provoked and they always crave attention and exercise.

You know, my naughty Chihuahua Flamey is like that – attention addict! So I always do a few fun dog exercises with her everyday but this did not help change her naughty habits.

See, Flamey likes to bolt out the door and I find that habit extremely irritating!

But, the biggest problem was her nipping behavior. She loves nipping on just about every soft material in the house. She nipped on my favorite sweater, my socks, tablecloth, curtain and God knows what else…

Enough, already!

I was tired of putting up with her crazy behavior! Training her was no cakewalk and this often got me s-o-o-o- riled up!

So, I looked up on the internet for some advice on Chihuahua puppy training and stumbled upon a guide that teaches you how train a dog with the help of a clicker.

The guide contains clearly explained training instructions for 30 different dog behaviors. It even showed me how to shape new behaviors in my Chihuahua using a very intensive but easy to follow training plan.

No problem! Several training sessions later, I managed to get Flamey to quit her excessive nipping habit. I’m happy as a clam because I can’t believe that Chihuahua puppy training using a clicker can be so effective and fun.

For me clicker training is the perfect way to train one’s Chihuahua puppy and if you choose to adopt this training method, then take note of these tips:

(1) When clicking be sure to position your hand by your sides. Reach for the reward/treat in your pocket after clicking. This is the best way to teach your puppy to respond to the clicker. If you reach for the treat before clicking, your puppy may end up responding to your hand movement and we want to avoid that.

(2) Always, always, always charge the clicker. If you charge it correctly, then you would not need more than 10 – 30 clicks to teach your puppy to completely respond to the clicker. However do keep in mind that it may take slightly longer if the charging process is done in places with distractions.

Trust me, with a clicker in hand and the proper instructions in place, Chihuahua puppy training can be effectively done in minimal period of time.
